Boat Harbour Surf Life Saving Club ready for bumper season
Boat Harbour Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) Junior program is gathering momentum with the introduction of a Nippers Periwinkles program.
It's not long now and the Surf Life Saving season will be back in full swing and the Boat Harbour SLSC is calling out for more Junior members.
Boat Harbour SLSC Junior Coordinator Cam Taylor said “This season Boat Harbour SLSC will be running a Nippers Periwinkles program for the first time. Our Periwinkles program will be modelled on the successful Burnie SLSC program and aims to introduce children aged 5 and 6 to surf lifesaving by encouraging participation in safe, fun and organised activities in a beach environment.
"Our Junior program has really reenergised over the last couple of years with our membership increasing considerably and many new families coming in from Wynyard and Sisters Beach. These kids have a great team spirit and we are looking forward to a long season of beach fun and carnivals.
"We are stoked that we now have enough members, parents and support to get this program up and running and we can't wait to see the little nipper periwinkles in action" said Taylor.
Surf Lifesaving is a great way for children to make friends, be active and learn how to enjoy the beach safely. Nippers first learn about surf awareness and safety. As they progress through the various age groups, nippers will undergo lessons in wading, running, ocean swimming, board paddling and lifesaving skills as well as learning the basics of resuscitation and first aid.
The surf lifesaving season starts in October and runs until March. Our nippers train one night during the week and again one morning over the weekend.
If your family would like to come and see what it’s all about, our first training session will be at Boat Harbour Beach 10am on Sunday 20 October. No need to become a member until you you’ve tried it.
